Abstract

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important oil seed crop with a high percentage of proteins. Using CT scanning of the pods, the entire period of seed growth and development was analyzed. Seed growth analysis in the terms of fresh and dry weights, and water content was performed, and the data were fitted to best polynomial equations. Seed set was observed after the 5th week and the maximum rate of dry matter accumulation (DMA) and water content was observed on the 10th week. The rate of DMA and water content showed a statistically significant relationship (P ≤ 0.001). The growth data revealed four distinct phases. CT scanning of the pod during various growth stages of the plants revealed that HU values for each seed and area of cross-section of the seeds revealed a very significant correlation with the DMA (P ≤ 0.001) in the developing seeds. CT scanning is a rapid and non-invasive technique to understand groundnut seed development, and better agronomic practices discussed.
