GC–MS analysis and antioxidant evaluation of two Aurèsian Asteraceae species Artemisia herba-alba Asso. and Artemisia campestris L.

Abstract


Artemisia herba-alba and Artemisia campestris were harvested from the Algerian Aurès area. Isolation of their essential oils was performed using steam distillation method, and the volatile composition was characterized using GC–MS and GC–FID techniques. The results revealed that the dominant constituents of A. herba-alba oil were camphor (35.4%), cis-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (9.0%), borneol (8.6%), cis-chrysanthenol (3.9%), filifolide A (3.7%) and cis-thujone (3.1%) whereas, prominent components of A. campestris oil were spathulenol (12.6%), α-cadinol (7.3%), phytol (6.6%), caryophyllene oxide (5.8%), salvial-4(14)-en-1-one (3.3%), α-epi-muurolol (3.2%), and verbenone (3.0%). The antioxidant evaluation by β-carotene test showed an interesting capacity for A. campestris oil (90.4%). These results will undoubtedly deepen our understanding of the volatile composition of these two species, encourage their future possible application in the food and healthcare fields, and stimulate additional investigations on Artemisia species.
