Abstract

Cyperus rotundus is a medicinal plant used in various countries, despite being very scarcely studied in Morocco, it is still exploited in the traditional Moroccan medicine. In this present work, a cold maceration of the Cyperus rotundus rhizomes was carried out, followed by a Liquid–Liquid Extraction of the obtained crude extract using different solvents with ascending polarity. Then, polyphenol and flavonoid contents were measured in the crude extract and its fractions. Antioxidant activity was also studied through free radical scavenging tests (ABTS and DPPH), and antibacterial activity was investigated by the agar diffusion assay method on four bacterial strains: two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative. The latter activities were performed on Cyperus rotundus rhizomes crude extract as well as its different fractions.
