Abstract


This study evaluated the influence of the physical state of plant material (fresh vs. dehydrated) on the yield and chemical profile of the essential oil of Cyperus sesquiflorus (Torr.) Mattf. & Kük. Extractions were performed by hydrodistillation, with data normalized on a dry weight basis (t-test, p < 0.05). The dehydration process (50 °C/72 h) significantly increased extraction efficiency, raising the yield from 0.33% (fresh) to 0.58% (dehydrated). GC–MS analysis revealed a predominantly sesquiterpene compounds matrix in both treatments. Although drying reduced the concentration of biomarkers such as aristolochene and the chemotaxonomic marker neopetasan, it conferred greater extract complexity, with 13.35% of exclusive constituents in the dried material. It is concluded that dehydration optimizes biomass utilization and logistics while preserving the chemical identity of the species.
