Ulmus wallichiana Planchon is a tree of immense medicinal importance whose habitat extends from central Nuristan in Afghanistan, traversing Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan, and reaching Northern India and western Nepal. It has been utilized as an astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, and diuretic. The tree’s bark has specifically been employed in folk medicine for healing bone fractures in both animals and humans. This plant exhibits significant therapeutic and economic potential due to the presence of various C-glycosylated flavonoids, which have thoroughly been examined for their characteristics related to osteoporosis as well as osteoclastogenesis. Furthermore, extensive research has uncovered a diverse array of pharmacological properties attributed to this particular plant species, including anti-hypertensive, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-hyperglycemic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Unfortunately, due to excessive exploitation in its natural habitats, this valuable species has experienced a reduction in both i.e., its species diversity and overall tree density, resulting in its classification as a vulnerable species.
Addressing the need for sustainable approaches like micropropagation is crucial for conserving this elite plant species for commercial production of its bioactive compounds to manage diverse ailments.
