Abstract


The climbing species of Piper mostly exhibit two distinct types of branching pattern. The orthotropic and plagiotropic shoots reveal different orientations (vertical and horizontal) and ecological functions (vegetative and reproductive), resulting in notable variations in its morphological and growth characters which creates confusion in its proper species delimitation. Therefore, this study is a contribution in this direction for easy identification of the species. Piper wallichii (Miq.) Hand.-Mazz. and Piper betleoides C. DC. used in the study were grown in the nursery and morphological details of different plant parts considering several features were studied. A thorough analysis of these characters of orthotropic and plagiotropic shoots showed significant differences in their leaves, stem and stipules in terms of shape, size, colour, texture, and indumentum. It was also observed that in Piper wallichii, some runner shoots produced from the orthotropic branches are found to be behaving like a rambler in its growth habit.
