Keywords: Mango ginger, Plant height, Rhizome, Tilled, Weed biomass
Mango Ginger is a rhizomatous spice crop as ginger and turmeric but with little research work, especially in the study area and in Sub Sahara Africa (SSA). Hence, growth and yield of mango ginger as affected by tillage and plant population under different agro ecologies and planting seasons in Nigeria. The experiment were arranged in a split- plot fitted into a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replicates. The main plot consisted of tillage operation: tilled and no tilled, while the sub plots were five different plant population treatments. Data collected on mango ginger and weed biomass were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA), and means separated with LSD at p < 0.05. The results showed that planting mango ginger on the tilled plot produced higher yield and yield components than no tilled. Conversely, higher weed biomass was recorded on the no tilled than the tilled plot. Mango ginger yield increased with increase in plant population from planting at 66,666 plants/ha to 133,333 plants/ha, while weed biomass reduced with increase in plant population from planting at 66,666 plants/ha to 166,666 plants/ha. Therefore, mango ginger should be planted on a tilled bed at 133,333 plants/ha.
