Abstract

Recent upheaval in anthropogenic activities as a consequence of industrialization and urbanization has definitely taken us a step ahead towards achieving the objective of globalization and fulfilled the requirements of increasing population. However, dark side of industrialization lies in the fact that despite being a boon in the name of technological advancements, recent developments have been a bane for environment and a huge setback to ecosystem as well as its associated components, including plants, animals as well as human beings. In this context, current study highlights the detrimental effects of air pollution caused by mines on photosynthetic efficiency of plants by portraying the malicious effects of pollutants in decreasing the level of photosynthetic pigments, namely, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids. Results unveiled in study in the form of air pollution induced decreased level of photosynthetic pigments which can be further extrapolated to decreased plant growth, metabolism and development. Results of the study depict hazardous effects of air pollutants caused by different mines on photosynthetic efficiency of plants. Therefore, this study is a reflection of the agonizing state of affairs prevalent in the form of obnoxious effects of air pollution caused by mines and a reminder to ameliorate current anarchical situation. Outcomes would be helpful in devising guidelines and policy for mining-derived pollution.
