Abstract

A leguminous plant native to East Asia, soybean (Glycine max L.) is commonly cultivated for its edible bean, which has a variety of uses. However, it has been reported that soybean loses it quality very fast when stored at room temperature. In view of this, a 14-month study was carried out at the CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute, Bunso to evaluate the effect of storage condition on seed longevity of soybean accessions and to ascertain whether differences exist among accessions. Seeds of five soybean accessions were harvested, processed and stored at room temperature (28 °C) and cold storage in a deep freezer at -20 °C for 8 months. The quality of stored seeds was determined by seed vigour and germination percentage at 2 months interval after storage. Before storage, the 100-seed weight and initial seed quality were assessed. The study showed significant differences in seed vigour and germination percentage among the five soybean accessions at 4, 6 and 8 months after storage (MAS). Soybean seeds stored at room temperature showed a significant reduction in quality at 8 months after storage while seeds stored at cold temperature maintained their quality in terms of seed vigour and germination percentage.
