Abstract

Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek, commonly known as mungbean, moong, and green gram is one of the important pulse crops. It has much potential to feed future populations due to high protein and Fe content in its grains. Worldwide, the yield of mungbean is very low and despite of many efforts, it is not much increased yet. Its low yield is due to its susceptibility to biotic stresses among which, mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) is the most destructive and prevalent. Identification of new sources of MYMV resistance is one of some novel plant traits in focus to increase its yield. To identify the source of resistance against MYMV, 35 mungbean genotypes were screened under field condition for two seasons and linked molecular markers against MYMV resistance. As a result, two genotypes namely, Meha and IPM 0205-7 were highly resistant against MYMV under field condition and also amplified MYMV resistance markers. Hence, these genotypes can be of great use to develop MYMV resistant varieties or populations. MYMV resistance linked molecular markers namely, OPP 07895 and OPS 07900 successfully discriminated highly resistant and highly susceptible mungbean genotypes against MYMV, which can be used for marker assisted selection (MAS) in particular genotypes or populations.
